Student of the Universe

I don’t know when I realized we lived in a universe that is incomprehensibly big. Maybe, I stumbled upon that concept as I flipped the glossy pages of an encyclopedia that I had chosen as my companion for that day. My tiny fingers tracing the outline of a satellite or the rings of Saturn. I’ve always been fascinated with the idea of knowledge. No matter how much I learn throughout the years, there’s always something more lurking right beyond my reach. The past, the present, the future. So much to know and understand, stretching out to infinity in all the directions.

The Routine

//An article I wrote for my school newsletter//

Beep. Beep. Beep.

You switch off your alarm after snoozing it for the 5th time. Grudgingly, you roll out of bed and freshen up. Within the next fifteen minutes, you sit in front of your laptop or prop your mobile, put in your earphones, ready for another day of online classes. I’m pretty sure this has become the monotonous routine of a lot of students.

Over The Years

We’ve been asked this question time and time again: “What do you want to be when you grow up?”. And throughout my 17 years of living, my answers ranged from pragmatic to eccentric.

As a kid, I would say I want to be a doctor one day and change my mind into becoming a dragon the other. I wanted to be whatever struck my fancy at that moment. I lived inside my own head.

Path Forward

Sometimes, when we miss each other too much, my best friends and I would talk about our future. It’s a little like facing our fears because we are terrified to think of what the future holds for us. Countless nights spent panicking about choosing the right college or career. It’s one of our biggest fears, maybe only after our fear of Pennywise the clown.

Future. ~ Written on Sept 12/20

// Wrote this for a contest with the prompt: “Me. Ten years from now” //

I think I’m finally getting my fair share of the luck the universe owes me because guess who I was talking to just the other day? 27 year old future me! This might be the time to slap my knee, and yell “Just kidding!”. But for once in my life, I’m being completely serious.

Night Showers

The sky is lit up from within
even though it's 8 P.M.
Glowing like my nightlamp
during my bedtime reads.

Not dark enough
that I can see the silhouettes
of the birds heading home
or they might really be bats
rushing to their midnight revel.

It has been smelling of rain for hours
thought I feel the soft caress of the drops only now.

I wish I could call the low rumble of thunder
a lullaby
But lightening after dark always cause
a slight temor in my chest
Ever since that close call
one summer night.

The weeping clouds
       sometimes a warning
       sometimes a small smile
on a face looking
up,
up,
up
peering down into the atmosphere.

A Trail Of Crumbs ~ Written on May 31/20

// I wrote this for the YWP NaNoWriMo Flash Fiction contest. It had to have the words: rainbow, spider and cake //

Her body was a statue in the sparse moonlight that made its way through the canopy. The only movement was the scuttling of spiders and the fervent movement of her eyes as she scanned the shadows. Shadows that could be masking anyone. Anyone out to hunt her in her woods.

Worthiness

Clothes spilling over the edges of my bed,
My closet, skin peeled open, showing the world her secrets
And mine.
Buried beneath nights of dreaming and broken jewellery,
Hidden under my bright scarves and a thread of hope
That all the stories and poems I've
Written in the dark
Spilling and scratching
Ink and graphite
On papers and scraps
Despair. Longing. Love.
Would all come to light
Just as sure as the Earth's gravity anchors me to the mud
And the slight tug of the moon, all the way across
Vast oceans of space, causing the water to rise and fall
Like my chest as I breathe.
Will these letters ever spell anything as beautiful
As the beauty I witness?
My mind in a tumult.
But my heart beats steady.
I am worth the universe.

Blackhole

There are things I whisper to the darkness.
They never leave my lips,
but their echoes twirl and trail sparks up my soul.
Fleeting.
Ephemeral.
Filling up the void
where even light doesn't dare to exist.
Yet, my dreams have found a home in that starless night.
Daring to live. Daring to hope.

Humanity: A Tragedy

Spinning through the void of the universe,
A rock filled to the brim with creatures.
A miracle. An oddity.
The product of infinite events that
Happened just right.

Swimming along the ocean of life,
Blessed to live without strife.
Evolution. Progression.
Yet we aim to crash, burn and destroy
Our only home.

Sprinting across the race of time,
Doing anything to win, even crime.
Greed. Jealousy.
Corruption within nations, families and
Even our souls.

Searching within the folds of our galaxy
For another habitable planet reality.
Desperate. Hopeless.
As we continue to not preserve what
We already own.

So all I have to say
Is to someday
Realize we are the ones who have to make way
To save our future and last another day.

Stop our selfishness and sway
Everyone around us to repay
The things we took for granted, okay?
Otherwise, we’ll witness doomsday.
