The Routine

//An article I wrote for my school newsletter//

Beep. Beep. Beep.

You switch off your alarm after snoozing it for the 5th time. Grudgingly, you roll out of bed and freshen up. Within the next fifteen minutes, you sit in front of your laptop or prop your mobile, put in your earphones, ready for another day of online classes. I’m pretty sure this has become the monotonous routine of a lot of students.

And this must be one of the only times in student history where we collectively miss going to school and having actual interaction with other people. I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’ve become bored with seeing the same faces of my family members every day. Yet, I also know that this is a great opportunity to spend quality time with our families. I know many of us spent the summer playing Ludo so often that now we have PTSD every time you see the game board.

I write this with a wistful expression, thinking of all the moments I didn’t appreciate last year. Moments where I sat with my friends while attending class or talking during our breaks. Who could have predicted how long online classes would go on for when they first closed school. And I’m more upset by the fact that I’m spending my last year of high school at home!

There are certainly a lot of advantages to virtual education, especially considering our current situation. I believe one of the biggest pros is the time we save. We have more free time to study at our own pace these days. I can study till midnight and not worry about missing the school bus the next day.

And we can also utilize the extra time to pursue our hobbies or learn something new. That book you’ve been meaning to read but always had something more interesting to do? Now, it’s the most interesting thing in your schedule. Or the fact that you’ve always wanted to learn how to stitch yet couldn’t make yourself to learn? Now’s the time to whip out the needle and threads.

So, don’t fret. Don’t spend your time reminiscing. The grass always seems greener on the other side. We can always make use of the situation we have now to better ourselves or just have fun.
